Our methodology, now on crypto Pinned

RelativeStrength about 9 hours ago

We've added a second market. Relative strength rankings, market breadth and themes now run across the top cryptocurrencies — around two hundred coins — using exactly the same machinery that runs on the ASX. The ASX remains what this site is built around; crypto is an extra market the same tools cover.

Relative strength is measured against Bitcoin, which is the convention this market already thinks in, and percentiles are computed within crypto only — a coin is ranked against other coins, never pooled with ASX stocks. Prices, volumes and market caps are in US dollars, because no Australian dollar order book is deep enough to rank a universe this size on.

Market breadth is the part we're most pleased with. What percentage of the crypto universe is above its 50-day or 200-day average, and how many coins advanced against how many declined, are readings equity traders have had for decades and crypto traders have had almost nowhere. Ours is computed nightly over a rule-based universe: the top names by market cap, with stablecoins, wrapped and bridged assets, staking derivatives and tokenised stocks removed, reviewed monthly.

Crypto trades every day, so it runs on its own schedule. Each bar is one settled UTC calendar day, which means the completed day arrives in our morning, seven days a week — entirely separate from the evening ASX run, and neither can hold up the other.

Some things are deliberately not here yet. The volatility-contraction scanner, the trend gauges, setup bars and the leadership map stay ASX-only until they've been calibrated on a seven-day market: their thresholds are counted in trading days and tuned on share volume, and porting them unchanged would give you numbers that look confident and mean something slightly different. We'd rather wait and show you the outcome statistics.

Crypto is part of the Trader plan and above. There's a full write-up at /features/crypto, including the methodology notes and the universe rule. Tell us what you'd like to see next on it.
