Power Trend & the ASX Index Dashboard

Monitor Power Trend status and moving averages for key ASX indices. Know when market conditions favour aggressive positioning.

A Power Trend flags the market conditions in which aggressive positioning has historically been rewarded — a healthy, established uptrend rather than a choppy or deteriorating one. We track it daily across the ASX's key indices, alongside moving-average posture and a read on volatility, so the overall market backdrop is never a guessing game.

Most market-timing tools are built with US indices in mind. This one is built for the ASX — the All Ordinaries, the S&P/ASX 200, the GICS sector indices, and a volatility index, checked against the same trend logic every trading day.

What the dashboard shows

Each key index gets a Power Trend status — on or off — updated at the end of every trading day. Alongside it sits the index's moving-average posture: whether the shorter and longer averages are stacked bullishly, in the order that typically accompanies a healthy uptrend, or tangled and rolling over.

A volatility read rounds out the picture, giving a sense of how calm or turbulent conditions are beneath the trend signal itself. Together, the three views are meant to be scanned in seconds, not studied.

When conditions favour offence

An environment signal isn't about picking stocks — it's about how much risk to carry while you do. Position sizing and overall exposure can follow the market's health: trade smaller and tighter when the trend is weak or uncertain, and press harder when the odds are more clearly on your side.

When a Power Trend is on, it's historically been a backdrop where aggressive setups have had more room to work. When it's off, the same setups have tended to carry more risk of failure — a reason to size down, tighten stops, or simply wait for conditions to improve rather than fight the tape.

The index dashboard

The Power Trend signal sits inside a broader index dashboard covering the ASX's key benchmarks and GICS sector indices in one view — moving averages, trend condition, and volatility, side by side. It's built to be a quick morning check: a couple of minutes to see whether the broad market and its sectors are in gear before you look at any individual stock.

Because sectors don't all move together, the same dashboard doubles as a rough map of where strength is concentrated — useful context alongside the platform's dedicated sector-rotation and market-breadth views.

Questions & Answers

What is a Power Trend?

It's a rules-based condition combining an index's trend and its moving-average behaviour, designed to distinguish a genuinely healthy uptrend from a choppy or weakening one. We keep the exact rules under the hood — what matters day to day is the resulting on/off status, not the mechanics behind it.

Which indices are tracked?

The key ASX benchmarks — the All Ordinaries and the S&P/ASX 200 — plus the GICS sector indices and a volatility index, all refreshed at the end of every trading day.
