A nightly rule-based screener across the full ASX. Volatility contraction candidates rated 1–5, with a browsable model book of historical setups and outcomes.
Our ASX VCP scanner runs every night, straight after the day's market data lands: a rules-based detector sweeps the entire ASX universe looking for volatility contraction patterns — a price range that keeps tightening, volume drying up as the tightening progresses, and a clearly defined pivot point where the stock is poised to move. No manual chart-flipping, no waiting on a blog post; the detector checks every stock in the market, every trading day.
Candidates that pass the full set of checks appear on the scanner the same evening, each one rated on a 1–5 scale so you can tell a textbook setup from a marginal one at a glance. Every candidate comes with an annotated chart showing exactly where the base formed and where the pivot sits, so you can verify the pattern yourself in seconds rather than taking a rating on faith.

Every candidate that clears the detector's gates the previous night lands here, ranked and rated. Each row links straight through to an annotated chart — the base shaded, the pivot marked, so you can see the setup rather than just read a score. It's the same view whether a stock set up yesterday or this morning: the scanner always reflects the latest completed trading session.
Every candidate is put through a consistent set of gates before it's allowed onto the scanner. First, trend template alignment — the key moving averages need to be stacked in the right order and rising, the hallmark of a stock in a genuine uptrend rather than a rebound out of a downtrend. From there, the detector looks for a series of successive contractions, each pullback in the base tighter than the one before it, showing the stock is being held with progressively less selling pressure.
Volume is checked alongside price: a proper VCP shows volume quietening down as the base tightens into its pivot, a sign that supply is drying up rather than sellers stepping away temporarily. Finally, the detector weighs relative strength leadership — a stock forming a tight base while it's already outperforming the broader market carries far more weight than the same pattern in a laggard.
We don't publish the exact numeric thresholds behind each gate — they're tuned over time as the model book grows — but every check above has to pass before a candidate reaches the scanner. Nothing is added on a whim or overridden by hand.
A rating is only useful if it means something, so every rating band is calibrated against our own historical model book — thousands of real ASX volatility contraction setups, scanned and scored the same way, with their actual forward outcomes tracked afterwards. We don't just assert that a 5-rated setup is better than a 2-rated one; we publish the breakout rates and forward-return statistics behind each band so the claim can be checked.
The published analysis shows a clear, positive expectancy edge concentrated in the higher-rated setups — exactly what you'd want from a scoring system that's actually measuring something real, rather than a cosmetic label. Signed-in users on the Pro plan can browse the full outcomes analysis, including the breakdown by rating band and by investment theme, alongside the browsable model book of every historical setup the detector has found.
The volatility contraction pattern was popularised by Mark Minervini, a US investing champion whose work on base structure and trend-following has influenced a generation of traders. Our detector implements the published concepts behind the pattern — tightening ranges, drying-up volume, a defined pivot, alignment with the broader trend — and applies them systematically to the ASX, every stock, every night.

A volatility contraction pattern, or VCP, is a base-building pattern where a stock's price range tightens in a series of progressively smaller pullbacks while volume dries up, usually resolving with a breakout above a defined pivot point.
Nightly, on every ASX trading day. The detector sweeps the full market as soon as that day's data lands, and new candidates appear on the scanner the same evening.
Yes — every setup the detector has ever found is kept in a browsable model book, complete with its annotated chart and, once enough time has passed, its actual outcome.
